Costa Rica's airports and airfields are an integral part of the national economy.

Costa Rica, located on the Central American isthmus, has a network of airports that allow it to connect its territory with the rest of the world.

These airports and airfields are important to allow commercial exchange, tourism and leisure travel.

In this article, we will talk about the airports and airfields of Costa Rica, their locations and particular characteristics. If you want to know more about the airports of this beautiful country, keep reading.

In some cases, some of them are called an airport and would be an aerodrome or vice versa. Therefore, first let's see how they differ.

An airfield and an airport are two types of aviation facilities, but there are notable differences between them.

An aerodrome is a facility for the takeoff and landing of aircraft. It can be a runway or open space used for non-commercial or low-traffic flights. Aerodromes are usually smaller and have fewer facilities than airports, and are often used for private, executive, cargo, and training flights.

On the other hand, an airport is a facility used for the takeoff and landing of commercial aircraft. Airports tend to be larger and have more facilities, such as passenger terminals, parking lots, shops, and restaurants. Airports also often have a number of air traffic control services, such as control towers and navigation systems, to ensure safe operation.

Another big difference between an airfield and an airport is the number of flights they make each day. An airfield typically has fewer daily flights and less overall air traffic compared to an airport. In addition, airports often have a greater number of routes and destinations available, while airfields typically have fewer options.

Regarding regulations, airports and airfields are subject to different regulations and security requirements. Airports are regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), while airfields are regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT). Airports also often have more stringent security requirements and are subject to regular inspection to ensure the safety of passengers and staff.

In short, airfields and airports are two different types of aviation facilities. Aerodromes are smaller and less developed facilities used mainly for non-commercial flights while airports are larger and more developed facilities used mainly for commercial flights. Airports also tend to have a higher number of flights

In Costa Rica there are four international airports. These are:

  • Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR)
  • Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO)
  • Tobias Bolaños Pavas International Airport (SYQ).
  • Limón International Airport (LIO)

San Jose Airport in Costa Rica
Juan Santamaria Airport

Located in the city of Alajuela and 17 km west of downtown San José. It is the main airport of Costa Rica. It is connected to all national and international destinations.

In addition, it is the only airport in the country with an international departure lounge dedicated exclusively to domestic flights.

Its name is due to the national hero of Costa Rica, Juan Santa María, a brave soldier who died in 1856 defending his country from the forces led by the American filibuster William Walker.

Several regional airlines operate at the Juan Santamaría airport, the main ones being SANSA and Costa Rica Green Airways.

It was the country's only international gateway for many years. Today there is also another international airport in Liberia, Guanacaste. Both airports have direct flights to North America, Central America and Europe, with the difference that Juan Santamaría International Airport also serves cities in South America and the Caribbean.

Location

Tobías Bolaños International Airport (SYQ)

Pavas Airport
Pavas Airport

Located in San José in the Pavas district. It is the third largest international airport in Costa Rica. It is connected to the main national and international destinations.

Although it is not one of the largest in Costa Rica, Tobías Bolaños is considered one of the main airports, and there are a large number of daily flights entering and leaving different parts. Tobías Bolaños annually serves more than 105,000 passengers, which ranks it not only as the thirteenth busiest airport in Central America, but also the third most popular and busiest in Costa Rica.

The Tobías Bolaños in Pavas is located very close to the Juan de Santa María International Airport, a few minutes from the United States Embassy. Its location is a few kilometers from the center of San José

It works as the main airport for domestic flights (they are carried out within the same country) and has international commercial flights to Bocas del Toto, Panama, Managua, Nicaragua, among others. It bears the name of the Costa Rican pilot Tobías Bolaño Palma (1892-1953), the first pilot to graduate, as well as laying the foundations of aviation in Costa Rica. This airport is the main base for the country's general aviation and most of the operations of private, chartered, tourist flights, helicopter operators and aviation schools are carried out here.

Construction began between 1954 and 1955, with the aim of replacing the La Sabana Airport. La Sábana generated conflicts due to its proximity to the buildings of the Costa Rican capital.

101 MORE AERODROMES IN COSTA RICA

We have mentioned the most important ones because they are international or national with significant traffic from domestic companies. But there are many others that are aerodromes used for agriculture, individuals, tourist flights, charter flights and some are also on the route of domestic flights.

Without intending to be exhaustive, we are going to mention the rest of the aerodromes in Costa Rica located by Provinces. Possibly we leave some, and it is also very possible that one of them is no longer in operation. If the reader were the owner of any of them and wanted to add some more detail, they could do so through our contact page. On the contrary, if any reader is the owner, manager or manager of someone else who is not on the list, we would appreciate it if you let us know so that we can include it. You can do it through the contact form

In each aerodrome we include a location link so that the situation map can be easily accessed.
